L.A. Bellini: What is it?!

“Being good in business is the best kind of art” – Andy Warhol

On my last day of work as a cleaner at a Fox Searchlight studio I decided do something brave, but also very stupid. I was Amsterdam-bound anyway so I couldn’t give a rats-ass if all the famous people who’s shit I had to mop up every fucking day thought I was a just another ‘bad amateur’. So I did it. I brought my screenplay to work and read it at the lunch table.

Soon enough, this hotshot producer sat next to me and asked me a very simple question.

“What is it?” He asked me for my logline! Holy shit!

Now I know most if you are not familiar with such lingo so here’s the Wikipedia definition:

“A log line is a brief summary of a television program or movie, often providing both a synopsis of the program’s plot, and an emotionalhook” to stimulate interest. “

Hoping for this moment since the day I started cleaning for ‘the movies’ I just felt overwhelmed. Finally! But… My screenplay is about so many really clever things and themes… Where to start? And then I fucked up.

“It’s about like, two girls who are really awesome and pull off a lot of really cool things. All my friends like it.”

By the time I looked up, he was gone. And so was my chance to make millions of dollars.  That night, I crawled up in my bed and decided that when in Amsterdam, I would become a professional. No more bullshit. No longer would I be unprepared for that make-it or break-it question.

I can hear you guys think: “Wow, what a dumbass, no wonder she ended up being a cleaner. You wrote it, how can you not summarize it in one sentence?”

Ignorant bliss.

What is OnzeEigen?

A few nights ago I ran into the mythical owner of onzeEigen.nl. A few awkward moments and a few coffees later I decided to pop that same question. Robin just stared at me with his big green eyes. I know that look, and it’s the look of young, totally clueless ambition.

But, ironically, not many people ever ask an aspiring writer, musician or painter ‘what is it?’ Usually they (the little doctors, little lawyers and little businessmen) stick to: “Leuk. Wel onzeker zeg.”

All artists dream of making a living doing what they love most – creating. And to achieve that one must be a cunning businessperson. Kind of like, an artsy business-ninja…

One day I’ll be back…
